Graduate Stories
CHAD DEWILDE, class of 2005
1.27.09: "Just wanted to say hi and see how things are going. Amy and I left Seattle about 8 months ago and I have been doing The Beautiful Design full time. Working at K2 was pretty rad, Seattle was awesome, I now have a stack of snowboards I did most of which are on my site. I am going to be working up in Hood River at Dakine for the next few months, 3 days a week. I have been working for them pretty regularly for the last year or so. I got a local account here (Bend) rebranding a brewery, they are opening a new pub as well, so I'll be doing all their work, got a bunch of their stuff up online too...anyway, let me know what you think of the new site, been fine tuning and tweaking alot
1.17.07: The winds are a changin’ down my way. I just accepted a job offer from K2 Snowboards in Seattle and am heading out with their design team to some trade shows in Vegas and a “trending” trip to New York this week. I am very excited to be right in the middle of the industry rather than merely freelancing for snowboard companies. I will be one of three designers at K2 doing all the boards, boots, bindings, ads, everything. Really busy, but should be a blast.
I have also been keeping busy with freelance projects. I recently entered the new ride snowboard design competition that I won last year, hopefully I will do ok again. That was a real shocker last year. I got the board a few months ago and it looks pretty cool, I am going to post some pics pretty soon. I also decided to start making my own shirt designs, I figured I spend so much buying other peoples designs that I might as well make my own. I sold out of my first run of shirts, and am now gettin ready to make a lot more designs. Should be pretty exciting. They are on my site right now. I am in the process of partnering up with an ecommerce guy to set up a store for me too.
SHANNON MANUEL, class of 2005
"Since graduating and coming on full-time at PECI, I’ve done a lot of really cool things...Currently there are 50 buses in the Portland area and five MAX trains that have my art work on them. We developed a full blown promotion around compact fluorescent bulbs that encompasses three states. My POP (Point of Purchase display) includes end cap displays, static clings, die cut danglers, and floor clings) is in 700 stores in the northwest. Pretty cool, huh?
I’m also developing two 48-page guides for the State of California that will go to print in early January. Those are in InDesign...thank God for master page layouts! I’ve gained so much knowledge around printing guidelines and getting the most for your money, working with your vendors, and even really cool stuff to know about mailing.
The Tri-met Campaign and some earlier projects that I’d worked on last summer are being submitted for a National Award for ENERGY STAR. AND - thank goodness for Kirsten’s class (the second year web design sequence), as I was asked to design and code our intranet system, which is now, 36 pages extensive. I am constantly telling people, I LOVE what I do so much, it almost doesn’t feel like work, which is how it should be right?"
DARIN GALLAGHER, class of 2005
"I wanted to thank you for keeping me in the job loop and let you know that I scored big. I was recently hired by NetBiz to rescue their newly developing web design offerings. They are a company that has only been around for three years but in that short time, they have grown from eight to fifty-five employees. They have recently added web hosting and page development to their services and that’s where I come in. The owner’s wife and friends of the family have been doing design for their splash pages up until now and none of them has had any experience with web design. I started at a great salary with benefits like medical and vacation after three months (one week vacation after six months, two weeks after one year). Not too shabby. And here’s the cool part: I was able to get them to hire [PW], too! He is supposed to start in two weeks. Together, we should be able to do some good things. What’s nice is, that any other designers that come after (and there should be a few more very soon) are going to be under us so we’ll essentially be managing/directing a group of designers very soon. I hope were up to the task. The company has a web site now but I think one of his first duties is to be to redesign it. It ain’t great. Our work should start appearing on the 'splash themes' section soon as they start replacing the existing ones. We’ll be keeping you updated I’m sure. Thanks for all our Instruction and hard work. It’s why I was able to get to where I am today. I’m sure [PW} would concur."
